MPE Welcomes the European Commission’s 2025 Work Programme and Calls for Strong Industrial and Circular Economy Measures

MPE welcomes the European Commissions 2025 Work Programme, which places a strong emphasis on Europes sustainable prosperity and competitiveness.

As a key player in Europe’s sustainable packaging ecosystem, MPE urges the Commission to ensure that the initiatives on the Steel and Metals action plan as part of the Competitiveness Compass, the upcoming Omnibus package on sustainability and the Clean Industrial Deal fully consider the needs of the metal industry, reinforcing its role in Europe’s green transition. These initiatives must ensure that European industry remains globally competitive, providing a supportive regulatory framework for sustainable and resilient supply chains.

MPE calls on the Commission to foster an environment that enables innovation, investment, and a level playing field for European producers in the face of international competition. Steel and aluminium, which are permanent materials that can be recycled multiple times without losing their inherent properties, are now at the top of the European Commission’s agenda. With the announcement of the US tariff suggested on steel and aluminium, pressure on this key value chain is growing, necessitating a strong EU response and a future-oriented trade policy.

Additionally, we urge for an ambitious Single Market Strategy. The strategy will be a crucial tool for the packaging value chain. Metal packaging plays a vital role in cross-border trade, whether as a product, filled packaging, or secondary raw materials.

MPE supports a holistic EU strategy that guarantees the resilience of the industry, reduces administrative burdens and considers the entire value chain using steel and aluminium.

“We welcome the Commission’s focus on competitiveness and resilience of the metal industry and want to be part of this holistic strategy,” stated Krassimira Kazashka, CEO of Metal Packaging Europe. “It is essential that future EU policies and implementation acts foster innovation, investment, and fair competition, allowing the metal packaging industry to thrive in a sustainable future.”

Metal Packaging Europe remains committed to working closely with EU institutions and stakeholders to ensure that the legislative framework fully supports the European metal packaging industry’s contribution to a more circular and competitive European economy.
